I made the move to the Association in 2011 after getting my start in three small accounting firms, the first in high school, another during college, and then another after college while working toward becoming a CPA. Coming from the small firm world of public accounting gives me specific insight into the types of challenges faced by these practitioners and I can use this platform to give small firms a voice within the Association. My position also gives me the opportunity to provide resources, tools, and solutions that will truly have an impact in the day to day lives of CPAs. In addition, being in this role has helped me step outside of my tax return comfort zone and learn about all the facets of the profession and use a creative side of my brain that I didn’t know existed. I’ve been published in various publications including the Journal of Accountancy and landed on several event agendas for speaking engagements throughout the country.
Paragraph summarizing your outreach beyond your firm, beyond the accounting community – what are you doing to make a difference in the profession, your community, the world – maximum 100 words
I lead the Association’s community service events in the Durham office by scheduling quarterly activities and encouraging staff participation. I strongly believe an organization of our size has an excellent opportunity to make a significant impact in our local community.
Personally, my husband and I are active in our local church and various community events. We welcomed a beautiful baby girl a few months ago, so our activities have taken a brief pause, but we hope to re-engage soon as we want to instill the importance of kindness and generosity in our daughter in a sometimes crazy, chaotic world.
Favorite influencer(s) (authors, bloggers, mentors, speakers, etc.) – maximum 100 words (please include links for bloggers)
So many people have positively affected my career development and helped guide me to where I am today. My hardworking and faith centered parents, Sam Underwood who provided my first accounting job, and Natasha Schamberger (now the CEO of KSCPA) who offered me the job at the Association. However, at the risk of brown-nosing, Kimberly Ellison-Taylor, AICPA’s current chairman, has become one of my favorite people in the past year. She is such a great example and leader for young women in the profession and has provided so much advice, support, transparency and humor as I became a working mom.
